Who we are
History
The Brazilian Society of Stereotaxy and Functional Neurosurgery (SBENF) was founded on September 16, 1980, in the city of Guarapari (ES), during the XIII Congress of the Brazilian Society of Neurosurgery.
Functional neurosurgery
Functional neurosurgery is dedicated to the treatment of disabling neurological dysfunctions such as chronic pain, movement disorders (Parkinson's disease, dystonias, tremor), spasticity, behavioral disorders (depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, Tourette's, aggression) and epilepsy .
Stereotaxis
Stereotaxis is a localization method that uses Cartesian coordinates so that, in the case of the brain, very small anatomical structures are located.with extreme precision.
Historically, stereotoxic surgery began in 1908, on an experimental basis, with Sir Victor Horsley and Robert Clarke.
In 1947, Spiegel and Wycis first reported the use of a stereotaxic apparatus in humans. Since then, several authors around the world have developed different models of stereotaxic apparatus, such as Lars Leksell in Sweden, Talairach in France, Riechert in Germany and Narabayashi in Japan.
The stereotaxic method, combined with better knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the nervous system and the improvement of imaging techniques (ventriculography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance), allowed the great development of functional neurosurgery.
